In brief
Lauttasaaren yhteiskoulu, Lauttasaari comprehensive and upper secondary school is an independent school. The students enter the three-year comprehensive school at the age of 13 and can continue in the same school building for their upper secondary school studies (the Sixth form/high school) or go to a vocational school. At the end of their upper secondary studies they graduate by taking the national matriculation examination.
There are about 700 students in the school, 350 in the comprehensive school and 350 in the upper secondary school. The comprehensive school has 16 classes, six in the 7th grade and for in the other two. The average size of each class is 22 students. The upper secondary has 13 year groups, four in each year plus one for those students who finish their studies in more than three years. On average there are 26 students in each group. The upper secondary school is a non-graded school and the actual study groups vary considerably in size, from 40 in some compulsory subjects to only a few in some special language groups. There are altogether some 50 teachers in the school, and they are qualified, experienced and motivated.
The school follows the national curriculum, and besides compulsory Swedish, students can also study English, German, French, Italian and Russian. There is also an extensive selection of Arts courses available, and in the upper secondary school students can also take special diploma courses in music, art, handicraf and media.
The school year is divided into five periods. In addition to the summer and Christmas holidays, there is a one-week autumn break in October and a one-week winter break in February.
The school was founded in 1945. It moved to its present building, designed by Kaija and Heikki Sirén, in 1967. The school building also includes a public swimming hall and an auditorium.
